4E-FTE Sensor Recommendations

Here is a list of cheap, widely available and reliable sensor recommendations with part numbers which should fit most 4E-FTE engine, please check the thread sizes on your OEM sensors to confirm fitment. If you spot any errors or want to suggest any other parts get in touch and I'll update the page.

Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor

This is a direct replacement for most 4E-FTE engines.

If you have a later model 97.04-99 engine then you might have the 3 pin coolant temp sensor rather than the 2 pin. The 3rd pin is for the gauge temperature and replacing this sensor for a Bosch will remove your gauge temperature.

One solution for this is either drive the dash temp with a PWM output. Another solution is to fit an older thermostat housing with the single pin dash sensor port and wire that to the temp pin.

UPDATE: Do not use the rad fan port for dash temp as this will not be accurate. We used to advise this but customer reported back the temp would fluctuate with the thermostat opening/closing.

Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor

The OEM 4E-FTE Intake Air Temp sensor is both expensive and difficult to source as well as being is slow to respond.

Our recommendation is to fit a modern fast response sensor like the one in our store. You will need to have a mounting boss welded onto intercooler piping, most people mount these just before the throttle body, ensuring the air passes through the element.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have a naturally aspirated (N/A) 4E/5E engine or a factory Automatic 4E-FTE then it's likely you may already have a variable TPS sensor. If you have a factory manual 4E-FTE engine then you will need a variable TPS sensor. Above is the sensor I recommend when replacing the stock ON/OFF TPS sensor on 4E-FTE engines. It's not a direct fit and requires an adapter to mount which we've developed along side Dyna Tune.

3 Bar MAP Sensor

This sensor is very affordable and will read up to 2 Bar of positive boost pressure which should be sufficient for most Starlet builds. Easy to mount with the single bolt hole. An external MAP sensor is only required if your ECU doesn't come with one built in.

Knock sensor

I recommend that most people replace the stock 4E-FTE knock sensor with this common Bosch wideband sensor if moving to a standalone ECU. These are not a direct swap as the stock sensor is threaded, however they can be fitted to the stock location using a Toyota threaded adapter and nut.

Oil Pressure sensor

From the factory the 4E and 5E engines come with a oil pressure switch which at high rpm is basically useless. It activates at 0.4 bar (5.8 psi) which is extremely low even at idle. Oil pressure increases with RPM and at 5,000 rpm for the 4E engine Toyota recommends between 3.6 - 4.6 bar (52.6 - 66.8 psi). The recommended oil pressure changes based on RPM and if you have 0.5 bar of pressure at 5,000rpm, the stock oil light will not alert you of such a dangerously low oil pressure.

Syltech MSPP 10BAR (145PSI) Gauge Precision Pressure Sensor-EP Wiring-EP Wiring

The solution we recommend for engine safety is to fit an Oil Pressure Sensor such as the Syltech MSPP 10BAR (145PSI) The port on a 4E-FE/FTE engine is 1/8 BSPT but these sensors have a 1/8 NPT thread. We recommend the sensor is remote mounted using an adapter hose. See a suitable part from R-Spec

With a Standalone ECU you can program engine safety limits base on rpm and oil pressure (please discuss this with your tuner to see what is possible with your chosen ECU)
